What to do first
Retrace your steps and call the last places you were; many keys turn up within hours. Check for a spare at home. If the key was stolen or lost with anything showing your address or plate, tell us, because many vehicles let us erase the lost key from the car's memory so it can't start it.
How an all-keys-lost job works
With no key to copy, the blade is cut from the vehicle's key code or decoded from a lock, and the new key is programmed to the immobilizer. Smart keys are programmed to the car's keyless system. For most vehicles this happens at the car, in one visit. Some newer vehicles restrict key programming to the dealer, and we'll tell you on the phone if yours is one.
Proof of ownership
We need photo ID and the registration or title in the same name, plus the VIN. If the documents are locked in the car, we open it first and check them there. For family, lease or company cars, have the owner or the paperwork available. No proof, no key.
Make a spare while we're there
Adding a second key during the same visit costs far less than another all-keys-lost job later. We recommend it every time.
Who does the car key work
Car key cutting and programming is done by our automotive technician. You call or text Rocket Locksmith, we quote the price before dispatch, and the technician comes to your car. Lock work on homes and businesses is done by Rocket Locksmith directly.
What affects the price
- Key type (transponder, remote, smart)
- Vehicle make, model and year
- Cutting from code vs. decoding
- Number of keys (a spare at the same time)
The price on the phone is the price at the door. We quote the total before dispatch and you approve it before work begins. If something changes once we see the lock, we stop and tell you first.
- Lock or hardware typeA standard deadbolt, a high-security cylinder and a smart lock are different jobs.
- Vehicle and key typeMake, model and year; mechanical, transponder, remote or push-to-start key.
- ComplexityOpening a latch vs. a thrown deadbolt; one cylinder vs. a whole building.
- TimeEvening and short-notice work can cost more than a scheduled daytime visit.
- LocationHow far the nearest technician has to drive, and access (gates, garages).
- Required partsCylinders, locks, key blanks, chips and fobs, itemized on the invoice.
