What kind of car key do I have?

The key type decides how a new one is made, how long it takes and what it costs. Answer a few questions. You don't need the key in your hand.

1. Do you still have a working key?
2. Does your car start with a push button?
3. Does the key have lock/unlock buttons on it?
4. Does the metal part flip out of the key?
4. What's the head of the key like?

Answer the questions and your key type appears here.

Car key questions

How do I know if my car key has a chip?

If the key has a thick plastic or rubber head, it very likely has a transponder chip, even without buttons. Almost all cars built from the late 1990s onward use chipped keys. The only sure way to know is to have it read by a locksmith or dealer.

Is a smart key the same as a key fob?

Not exactly. A smart (proximity) key lets you start the car with a push button while the key stays in your pocket. A regular key fob just locks and unlocks, and you still turn a key to start.

Can every car key be made by a locksmith?

Most can. Some newer vehicles restrict key programming to dealers. Tell us the year, make and model and we'll tell you before sending anyone.
