Salt air eats locks here

A lock a few blocks from the ocean has a harder life than one in Kendall. Salt spray gets into the cylinder, pins corrode, springs weaken, and a key that turned smoothly last year now needs a wiggle. That wiggle is the warning before a lockout. On Miami Beach we see a lot of locks that just need cleaning and proper lubrication, and some that are past saving.

If you're replacing hardware this close to the water, ask about finishes and materials built for coastal exposure. Our salt-air lock care guide explains what lasts and how to maintain it.

Art Deco and MiMo buildings

The Miami Beach Architectural District and the MiMo buildings further north have original doors and frames that owners and associations want to keep. Changing exterior features on a designated historic building can require review by the city's historic preservation staff. Swapping a cylinder or rekeying doesn't change the look of the door; replacing a whole handle set on a street-facing door might, so check with your association first.

Condo lockouts

Most Miami Beach lockouts are condo lockouts. Many buildings have a front desk or a manager who controls access to the floor. Tell us the building, let the desk know we're coming, and have your ID (or someone who can vouch for you) ready. If your ID is inside, we'll open the door and check it together before we leave.

Keys lost at the beach

Keys go missing in the sand every day. If your car key was on the ring, the job is making a new key, not just opening the car. Use the key finder to see what kind of key your car needs, then call. Tell us the lot or garage and the nearest street. For South Beach, the garage name and level save a lot of time.

Short-term rentals and second homes

Owners who aren't here full-time often switch to keypad or smart locks so they can issue and delete codes remotely, and so a lost key doesn't mean a rekey. If you keep keys, rekey at every change of property manager or cleaner.

Pricing

Every job is quoted before dispatch.

Other factors: the lock or hardware, the vehicle and key type, complexity, the time, your location and any parts. The price on the phone is the price at the door: quoted before dispatch, approved before work begins. How our pricing works.

Locksmith in Miami Beach: questions

Why do my locks keep sticking near the beach?

Salt and humidity corrode the pins and springs inside the cylinder. Cleaning and a proper dry lubricant often fixes it; badly corroded cylinders should be replaced or rekeyed with new parts.

Can you open my car in a Miami Beach parking garage?

Yes. Tell us the garage and level. We'll need to see ID and the registration before handing the car back.

Can I rekey my condo door without asking the association?

Rekeying doesn't change how the door looks, but some associations keep a key for emergencies. Check your building rules and give them a new key if required.
